Victor Sassoon owned 1929–1941
Built as the Cathay Hotel by Sir Victor Sassoon, it was the most glamorous address in Asia. Sassoon kept his penthouse on the top floor, hosting legendary parties overlooking the Huangpu River.
Noël Coward visited 1930
Noël Coward wrote "Private Lives" while recovering from influenza in Room 314. The play premiered in London later that year and became one of his most celebrated works.
